Subliminal Persuasion - Does it work?
Subliminal persuasion is not a medium of communication that everyone is aware of. Yet it is a form of communication that virtually everyone has experienced knowingly or otherwise.
Natural Forms of Subliminal Communication
You might be able to relate to this example of subliminal communication.
Have you ever had the experience of being in a group of people and listening to the conversation? You may participate in the conversation by offering your opinion or relating examples of your experiences to the others from time to time.
On a particular occasion that you contribute something to the conversation, one of the other people in the group exclaims, I have just said that! You then recognise that unwittingly you have repeated what someone else has just said. To cover your embarrassment you might add that you didnt hear it being said at the time or that you had been miles away.
Then there is an example of the opposite of the above experience of subliminal communication that can happen too. This time you may say something to the group and then another person, a few seconds later says the exact same comment. They also state that they were unaware that you had said the same words.
So what has actually occurred here? On both these occasions, both people, you and the other person, said that you never heard the other say the words that were then repeated. This, not remembering hearing something that was said, is true in an intriguing way.
The excuse used for repeating what had been said, I didnt hear you is true from a point of view of conscious hearing. You see in these examples, both never consciously registered what was said. In fact it could be argued, both you and the other person were deep in thought, daydreaming or in a trance. A hypnotherapist may well suggest that you were both momentarily in hypnosis.
Whatever your opinion is, it is true that those words were registered in the conscious mind. Yet they must have been picked up by some part of the mind. The truth is more likely that they were heard by the subconscious mind. Later on when the conscious mind was thinking of something to say the subconscious mind brought forward the words that had just been said earlier by someone else.
Now because those words were relevant to the topic of conversation the conscious mind took them and used them in the form of speech.
The word "subliminal" means below consciousness.
This is a great example of how the conscious mind can be by-passed and how the subconscious mind can take on information and even suggestions. This in effect what a hypnotherapist aims for with their suggestions. To bypass the conscious mind and to get suggestions in the part of the mind that needs to make a change, which is the subconscious mind.
This is the same idea that can work so effectively when used in a subliminal cd. The subliminal cd will include words and suggestions specifically targeted at assisting the listener to change. The words used in a subliminal cd may be masked by music or sounds of nature or a more modern breakthrough is to use speeded up speech called a Whisper Subliminal.
