New Employee Hold'em? Research Reveals Nearly Six Out of 10 U.S. Workers Are Not Fully Engaged in Their Jobs
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) September 22, 2008-- Organizations continue to squeeze all they can out of processes and technology, but according to research released today by Employee Hold'em?, they can significantly improve business results by focusing on the relationships they have with their employees. The 2008-09 Employee Hold'em National Workforce Engagement Benchmark (http://www.employeeholdem.com/benchmark.html) found that fifty-seven percent of employees are reluctant to work hard at their jobs -- and worse yet, reluctant to leave -- or they are unengaged and actively doing things that will threaten the organization. Only forty-three percent of the U.S. workforce is fully engaged and willing to stay with their employer longer, work harder for customers, and recommend the organization as a great place to work.
"People are the greatest untapped differentiator of a business. How can any company be successful when only four in ten of their employees are likely to go the extra mile for customers, believe ethics are more important than profits, and stay for the next two years?," says Marc Drizin, Founder & Chief Instigator of Employee Hold'em and an author of the WorldatWork books Workforce Engagement, Strategies to Attract, Motivate, and Retain Talent (2007) and Employee Engagement Fundamentals: A Guide for Managers & Supervisors (http://www.worldatwork.org/waw/adimLink?id=27779) (2008). "A key takeaway from the new Employee Hold'em National Workforce Engagement Benchmark for all human resource professionals, company executives, and managers is the vital need to focus on the employer-employee relationship and the 4R's of Workforce Engagement?. By enhancing understanding of organizational practices and employee priorities, attitudes, behaviors and intentions, organizations can recruit, retrain, reward and retain productive and effective employees."
The top driver of U.S. workforce engagement is Daily Satisfaction according to the National Workforce Engagement Benchmark. Employee engagement soars when the daily work experience includes managers and supervisors who are able to: recognize what motivates employees to come to work each day; ensure working relationships are positive; allow for autonomy and discretion in job performance; show respect to employees; and maintain a high-performance, enjoyable workplace. An employee's willingness (and even desire) to work hard, stay longer, behave ethically, and get along with co-workers is, among other things, largely dependent on the extent to which the individual employee enjoys positives relationships in the workplace, especially with their direct supervisor or manager.
To develop the 2008-09 National Benchmark on Workforce Engagement, Employee Hold'em interviewed with 2,368 employees, who were 18 years of age or older and working in companies of all sizes. These interviews were conducted in April and May of 2008. Full and part-time workers representing public, private, and not-for-profit organizations were included in this national research effort.
