50,000 Working Moms Apply for Project Working Mom Scholarships
Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) April 29, 2008 -- eLearners.com, a web resource of EducationDynamics, today announced that its advocacy campaign "Project Working Mom: Putting Education to Work" (www.projectworkingmom.com) has received more than 50,000 online education scholarship applicants. The high interest in this campaign illustrates the importance of education to working moms across America. As part of the campaign, eLearners.com, in collaboration with American InterContinental University, DeVry University and Walden University, will give away at least $2 million in full-ride scholarships to working moms to further their education and enrich their lives. Since its launch on January 29, 2008, www.projectworkingmom.com has attracted an average of 500 scholarship applicants per day. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 30, 2008 with the scholarship recipients being announced in May.
"50,000 entries is a number that makes you do a double-take. We knew when we started this campaign that we were addressing a real crisis, but we had no idea how significant," said Terrence Thomas, Chief Marketing Officer for eLearners.com. "We are receiving tens of thousands of passionate and heart-wrenching essays from working women who see online education as the stepping stone to a better life for themselves and their children."
Statistics show that children of parents with a high level of education outperform children whose parents do not have an advanced education. In fact, the National Assessment of Educational Progress found that from 1978 to 2004, 17-year-olds with parents that have higher levels of education did better than adolescents with parents that have less education on every measurement point.
eLearners.com (www.elearners.com) decided to take action and created Project Working Mom after receiving an overwhelmingly positive response to a $1,500 scholarship opportunity for women to attend school online. Each woman had her own unique story, but one significant trend became very apparent: many of the entrants were working moms. In fact, almost half of the applicants were divorced or never-married working mothers raising children alone. Census data also reflected the trend that eLearners.com found; most working mothers start college, but life's demands and the barriers of time, money and confidence do not allow them to finish. Seeing a need, Project Working Mom was formed. Visitors to www.projectworkingmom.com will find a comprehensive interactive website with online education resources and a community of women who can share their stories and experiences.
"Project Working Mom is only a Band-Aid to the cycle of under-education and under-employment among working moms in the U.S.," continued Thomas. "What these women are up against is a financial road block made worse by the lack of federal financial aid for part-time students."
According to the American Council on Education (ACE), part-time students have lower costs than full-time students so they are less likely to get financial aid. An ACE study from 1999 to 2000 found that only 35 percent of part-time students received grants. Another financial aid hurdle is that in order to even be eligible for a Stafford Loan students must be attending school at least half-time. Project Working Mom helps address this issue by offering a database of $15 billion in scholarship opportunities, as well as the $2 million in full-ride scholarships.
An online degree (http://www.elearners.com/) is ideal for working moms because they don't have to commute to class, they can study any time of day and they can study at home with their kids. In fact, research from partner school American InterContinental University shows flexibility is a main draw for women going to school online. The survey found the majority of mothers interested in furthering their education look for flexible education programs and found that mothers beginning their college careers are more likely to prefer online classes (http://www.elearners.com/courses/).
