Parents as Teachers National Center Offers Professional Development on Working with Teen Parents
(PRWEB) October 25, 2007 -- While teen pregnancy is on the decline, more than 31 percent of young women in the U.S. face the challenges of growing up while also raising a child. Parents as Teachers National Center has built a solid reputation for its professional training for early childhood educators. Recently it began expanding its outreach to other professions that work specifically with teens.
"Teen parents face unique issues, and if we are to effectively deliver education, counseling and other social services to these individuals, professionals need to be equipped with knowledge of these issues and the skills necessary to bridge the generational gap," says Jadine Walters, teen trainer with Parents as Teachers National Center. "This training is for any professional who works with adolescent parents; it offers valuable insights into these parents, their children and the brain development characteristics that are unique to teens."
In addition to adolescent brain development, "Issues in Working with Teen Parents" training covers:
* The parallel development of both the teen parent and child; * Techniques to enhance teen parents' feelings of confidence and competence; * Strategies to help teens transition into adulthood; * The special family dynamics and multigenerational issues teen parents face; * Father involvement; and * Adolescent lifestyles and interests.
Walters says another benefit is that this training offers professional development credits and/or continuing education units, depending on the training option that is chosen. "Every licensed profession requires ongoing professional development and continuing education," she said. "This training meets those requirements."
Two training options are available: a two-day package offered at locations around the country and a custom, on-site package; both include the guide, which is also sold separately through the Parents as Teachers National Center e-Store. Training fees range from $225 to $300 per person, depending on location and number of attendees.
Parents as Teachers National Center also offers a variety of other professional trainings through Parents as Teachers University, including topics such as literacy, obesity and nutrition. For more information on teen training or these other topics and for registration details, go to www.ParentsAsTeachers.org/university or call (314) 432-4330, ext. 251.
