Learn to Speak Spanish at Work

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world after English (Mandarin tends to just be in China). In the United States it is definitely the second language. States like California, Florida and Texas that are close to Latin and Central America and attract many Spanish speaking immigrants have many areas where Spanish is the language of choice. Daily life and business are conducted in Spanish. Other parts of the country like New York and Washington D.C. Also have a large Spanish speaking community. It makes sense to learn Spanish if you live in these areas as it will help you to interact within the community and will help in your job prospects and career progression.

The good news is that if you work in an environment where Spanish is spoken frequently you have a massive head start on a many people that want to learn Spanish. You will have a huge source of knowledge at your disposal. If you tell people at work that you are learning Spanish they will no doubt be happy to help you out and sensitive to your needs and struggles as you learn the basics.

A big problem when learning a new language is that you don't hear it spoken or practice it enough. You will have no problems if you hear it spoken at work every day. You will be able to ask what certain phrases or words mean. You will be able to learn the proper pronunciation much more quickly hearing it from your co-workers than you will studying it in a book. Pronunciation and accent are important when learning a language because most people will understand a sentence that is pronounced correctly, even if it is grammatically incorrect, whereas if your pronunciation is bad they will just look at you blankly. If people understand what you are saying this will give you the confidence to carry on and say more complex things.

The idea of immersion is often mentioned in regards to learning a new language. It means surrounding yourself completely with the language and culture that you are learning. This is often not practical for people that work in English environments, however this is not the case if you work in a Spanish environment. If you are living in Miami, for example, you can have the best of both worlds. You can immerse yourself in the Spanish language during the day and then fall back on English at night. You will also have bilingual friends that can help you make the transition from Spanish beginner to fluent Spanish.

And of course, you have to keep the big picture in mind. Bilingual people have far better job and career prospects. They will have a better understanding of their native tongue if they can become fluent in another language because the language used to describe the grammar of one language is the same for another. Mastering a new language can give you the confidence to take on bigger challenges and help you grow as a person.
